Well…the whole of Singapore seems to be embroiled in the saga that is the manhunt of the escaped JI militant, Mas Selamat. Surprisingly, I think most of the “discussions” have been coming from the online forums. The content on these forums are mainly skewed towards “active debate” on how the fugitive can manage to limp his way to a prison break and to continue to elude the combined might of our police and security forces. On the other hand, our national media seems to be focusing on how our countryman are banding together in a show of unity and optimism to assist in the capture of this person. Keywords that are often used in the reports are “confidence”, “safe”, “trust”.
I say that the different angles adopted by the media is all good in that it gives a more complete picture of what the hell is going on. = )
Probably one place where you will not find Mas Selamat is erm…dining at Pasta de Waraku. Ok..that was a very weak attempt at combining a food posting and a very (I emphasize) serious piece of news.
If you appreciate how our dear Government has not spared any of our national resources (nsman, gurkhas, police, volunteers, media, and now the national telco) in tracking down the JI fugitive, you will be similarly awed at how the Japanese are doing a heck of a great job at re-inventing the pasta.
Seriously, the Japanese have a knack of Japonising any food item, making it seem so much more oriental and in most cases so much more tasty.
We went for the Okonomi Cheese (S$8.80) as a starter. Good stuff. Baked cheese with some ingredients added in. A sprinkling of seaweed to complete the Japonisation.
The pasta dishes all came with Mini Salads. It was mini all right.
My choice of pasta was the Spicy Carbonara Prawn (S$15.80). I love Carbonara. I love Spicy. Thereby equating to my increased fondness for this item. Truly a great combo.
My partner’s choice was the Meat, Bacon and Eggplant Spaghetti (S$14.80). She is into Eggplant. So am I now. Again, an item that really demonstrates how the addition of new ingredients (in this case, the Eggplant) can lead to a refreshing concoction and re-invention of the original pasta dish.
Anyway, here is to our great nation capturing the “sometimes” limping and unarmed JI fugitive with our overwhelming and efficient security force. Ganbatte kudasai!
