There is always a steamboat event during the Chinese New Year. This year I had a private one with my missus at a old-time favourite steamboat place of mine.

Mini Steamboat Delight started out as a one stall outfit in the basement of Parkway Parade many years back. They have since expanded multi-fold and now occupy a cosy corner of the basement food court.

The place is often packed during dinner time. More often than not patrons are compelled to share tables with other customers. It is a testament to the popularity of the place that the diners have accepted this arrangement. We were quite fortunate to have a private table open for us.

Our selection of raw food for the steamboat consists of:
1. Mix meat set ($9.50) of pork, chicken, liver
2. Prawns (S$8.00), around 4 - 5 of them
3. Seafood Tau Fu (S$4.00)
4. Golden mushroom ($4.00)
A complementary plate of vegetables was given. A feature of this place was that chicken rice (S$0.65 per bowl) was used instead of the normal plate white rice. I feel it adds much flavour to the meal.

We always go for the Tom Yam soup stock. Some people like to have a two compartment steamboat - one with the chicken stock and the other compartment with the Tom Yam. I say screw the pussy chicken stock and go for the spicy broth.

And I must really emphasize that I really love the chili mix there. It is what makes the food there special (besides the Tom Yam stock). It is a blend of several ingredients which I am unable to identify but it sure gives an oomph to the food. I normally clear our the contents of the chili bowl at the end of the meal.

I guess everybody knows how a steamboat meal works. Get lots of raw/fresh food. Dump it into the steaming pot. Eat.

During the meal, we ended up with a bowl of freshly cooked prawns that were just calling out for a subservient person to peel and deshell for the other party. I shall leave it to you to guess as to who got the hands dirty..heh.

This place comes highly recommended. The only sore point is the high prices of the items. Seriously..S$8 for a small plate of raw meat, S$4 for raw Golden mushrooms… The owner obviously has a good thing going on. Customers pay him good money for raw food that they have to cook on their own. Yup.

The prices seem to be on the high side…have you tried the steamboat at Roxy Square? The concept is similar and it’s cheaper too, if I didn’t remember worngly.

Yup. Tried the steamboat at Roxy Square before. I just find the chilli dip at Mini Steamboat irresistible though…damn.
