Empress Road Market
Address: 7 Empress Road (near Farrer Road), Singapore 260007
This place gives me mixed feelings.
Sky had introduced to me to a stall there that served a mean (meaning “good”) dish of Cha Kway Tiao (or fried noodles in dark soy sauce). Adopting a rather disbelieving demeanor, we ordered the small portion of the noodles at S$2. It was definitely priced very cheaply - the initial signs were not good.
However, our perceptions were swayed instantly on first presentation of the Cha Kway Tiao. There were big pieces of the Lup Cheong (or preserved Chinese sausage), lumps of eggs, quite a few cockles, all mixed in with the dark soy sauce coloured noodles.
The noodles were moist and superbly flavored. There was a slight hint of burnt lard smell that added to the alluring and sinful taste sensation. And do not get me started on the fried lard. I thank the stars that this hawker has obviously not be affected by the whole crappy healthy food movement going on. He was like a one man army compensating for the demise of oily food in the country - meaning copious amount of the porky fat bits in our noodles. Simply mouth-watering.
Just last week, Sky (our stand-in leader to organise mahjong session while Jay was away) brought me to the market again. I chose to have Mee Goreng from another store. I promptly succumbed to a bout of stomach cramps and diarrhoea. And I lost $30 at mahjong too…
Mixed feelings, I say.

first of all, i don’t know where you dug up that photo from…it must have been yonders ago…and i’m not a big fan of cha kuay tiao, so it must have been the big cockle displayed at the stall’s window that attracted you…
secondly, i didn’t recommend the mee goreng either…which you should have been more the wiser to have chosen, given the greasiness of the stall itself…
and lastly, you only lost $27…
hehe. =D
