If anyone is looking for authentic Ayam Penyet (or smashed fried chicken), this eatery is the place to go. I say that with confidence because my food scout (aka BT) and his Indonesian girlfriend have placed their recommendation on this place. Cravings they have for Indonesian food can be satisfied here at Ayam Penyet Ria, a Indonesian restaurant with franchises in Indonesia and now, Singapore.

The Ayam Penyet (in the background of the picture below) consists of the chicken fried until golden brown and smashed/flattened, tofu fried until golden brown, some weird tasting bean based mix that is also fried until golden brown (I will comment on this later) and vegetables which were not fried until golden brown. A huge dollap of sambal chili is also added to the side.
Besides Fried Chicken, they had Fried Sotong (in the foreground of the picture) with the same accompanying sides.

There is also Fried Beef and Fried Catfish.

The food just blended into one blur of edible material. Don’t get me wrong. It was pure excitement when we were faced with the prospect of just having all these glorious Golden Fried Brown items. Everyone was attacking the dishes with wild abandon, trying to compete on who would take the title of gluttony personified. My only dislike in the dish was the unidentifiable Fried weird tasting bean based mix. BT’s gf was the only one among the group that found it flavorful.
After the initial euphoria, our taste buds started to go numb with both the phenomenal spiciness of the Sambal Chili and the overloading of Fried food. Our pace dropped significantly and normality was restored when our taste buds decided to give up, pack their bags and go looking for a more herbivorous creature to set up domain in.
Thankfully, BT and GF had ordered some respite in the form of the Oxtail Soup. The Soup however tasted like Soto Ayam (or chicken soup) but with Oxtail. It was quite good except for the confusion of taste.

Another must try is the Teh Sosro (Indonesian sweet ice tea) due to it’s unique taste that has not been replicated by any other beverage in Singapore yet.
Well…the overall expenditure was about S$12/pax for 5 persons for 3 Ayam Penyets, 1 Fried Catfish, 1 Fried Sotong, 1 Fried Beef, 1 Fried Beef Balls and the Oxtail Soup. Not bad.

hahaha, thanks for enlightening! Glad you found it delicious. The rest of us were quite resistant to the taste though.
