The month of August is almost over. The national day parade has taken place. The flags have been flown. The national day rally has been conveyed. The celebration is almost completed. However…the huge-ass giant billboards with national day messages are still up around the various housing estates.

These are not normal national day billboards. They depict the relevant Constituency’s Members of Parliament (MP) in various poses. The most common shot would be that of a group of our MPs walking abreast, almost striding, with huge smiles on their faces…some of them waving their hands. I would hazard a guess that the image is supposed to symbolise a unified march towards towards prosperity and progress….or something.
Which would work…if either the pictures of them could be better taken or we had more photogenic leaders. Seriously, some of them look pretty awkward with their rather frightening smile (flashback to the group of MPs who performed their hip hop dance in public). If I were a parent with a naughty & noisy kid, I bet I could silence the child up by bringing up the spectral of our grinning elected MPs.

Anyway, if any of you guys were near the Lau Pa Sat area catching the National Day parade and the fireworks, you might have caught sight of this rather low key Italian restaurant - Etna.

You got to love it when restaurants serve free appertisers - cured meat, cheese, salami, bread sticks. Yum Yum.

Our pasta dish was the Bigoli Boscaiola (S$22, Bigoli pasta, a kind of thick pasta made from whole wheat in the Boscaiola sauce which was mushroom). It was fabulous! It tasted like an upgrade of the usual carbonara pasta I have. It was quite wow!

The Pizza Calzone (S$20) was of an equally high standard. The juices and melted cheese were all trapped inside the crust of the Pizza bread. Thus the aroma and liquid goodness just spewed out when we pierced the skin of the bread.

Highly recommended if anyone is looking for a nice italian eatery in this part of the town.

Your pasta at Etna looks great! But what has caught my attention was the free appetizers - have yet to come across an Italian restaurant that serves something other than just bread with olive oil/balsamic vinegar.

I called 6220 5513 to ask “Do you have a branch in the East Coast area?”, but was told that you do not serve brunch. I rephrased my question to ask if “do you have another location in the East Coast Road area?”, and got the same answer in English that is spoken quite well. I almost gave up.

Fortunately, I asked the question a third time “Do you have another place in the East Coast Road or Katong area?” Then I heard a someone telling him in Malay before he answered that you have outlets in Lau Pa Sat and East Coast but do not serve brunch!! Then I asked further before I obtained the address and telephone number 110 Upper East Coast Road 6444 9530. What impression does that give a caller?

haha…i guess they really do not serve brunch.

On a more serious note… i encounter more difficulties communicating with staff from the F&B industry nowadays. Might be the influx of foreign talent who are not used to my Singlish…or just general dis-interest from the staff. sigh.

So far when I call for booking was okay, they pick up the phone in a professional way. The lady was so nice to help me locate the East Coast branch. Recently I notice there are a lot of foreign trainees in the F&B. Seems locals don’t prefer the jobs… So I some how agree with you that they may not understand our Singlish…
