Part 3 of What’s with the transport system in Singapore!
Taxis and Taxi Companies!
1. They disappear during the witching hour of between around 9 pm and 11:59:59 pm. Even if you happen to catch one of these taxis idling in a backstreet corner, and wave to the said taxi like a mad man hoping to induce the cabbie to take on your fare and even after you knock on the windows with a super pathetic hound dog look to plead for him to take your money… the taxi driver will nonchalantly shake his head and just stare blindly ahead. However, the moment the clock strikes 12:00:00, they come out in droves ready to impose their 50% midnight surcharges on the long suffering consumers.

2. So there you have the taxis waiting for bookings during the peak period so that they can earn extra. The commuters are calling taxis because there are no taxis on the road. The booking system is choked because too many commuters are calling in thus ensuring that the bloody taxi booking system does not work during the peak hours. A situation arises where commuters are staring at vacant taxis all over the place while the vacant taxis are waiting for bookings. Urrggghhh!

3. Taxi drivers that pick me up from the airport and give me that super black face when they realise my destination is not some far flung place like Jurong or Woodlands but just 10 minutes away.

4. The taxi companies are not doing anything about the mess. Why don’t the face the music and admit that something radical must be done to eradicate this phenomenon. I blame the bloody taxi companies!

Unfortunately, I consider taking taxis as one of my main forms of transport. So until the day I get a vehicle of my own (which would present its own set of bloody problems), I would have to grin and bear all the crap.

So I grinned and bore all the crap on my taxi journey to Sunshine Plaza. The reason why I got wind of the place was from reading ieatishootipost. They had glowing reviews of the place there. In addition, printed copies of the recommendation from another food blogger (chubby hubby) was pasted all over the shopfront. And it is literally a shop space, nestled among all the regular retail stores, that is converted into a kitchen.

My gf and I were led to another shop a few metres away. You guessed it. They had converted that shop space into the sitting area. It was around that moment when we realised we were probably not going to get hot towels before our meal.

We ordered the regular stuff. Shrimp Dumplings (or Har Gaw), Meat Dumpings (or Siew Mai), Char Siew Buns, Carrot Cake, Congee, Chee Chong Fun, Steamed Pork Ribs and Fried Beancurd Skin.

The Carrot Cake was pretty usual. It was like a paste immersed in a sweet/savoury sauce. Tasted not bad. Refreshing change from the usual black or white stuff we get from local hawkers.

The Pork Rib was another story altogether. It smelt and tasted like the meat had just been extracted from a recently deceased pig. And that is not a good thing. The aroma of pig is not exactly very appetising.

The Beancurd Skin With Prawn Filling was ok. Probably due to it being the only fried dish we had.

The Char Siew Bun was touted as a must have/special item in the menu. But I found it rather ordinary. In fact, the meat was a bit too sweet for my liking.

All in I was quite disappointed with the fare. I had high expectations for the place due to the recommendations I found online. The one thing I had to agree with was that the food was relatively affordable (around S$24 for all the items)…
