Eng Seng Restaurant (The Crab Nazi)

-->

Address: 247 Joo Chiat Place (Junction of Still Road and Joo Chiat Place)

Our dear leader, J, had returned for his holiday from Australia. To commerate this event, we went for our usual crab escapade at Eng Seng.

We proceeded for our dinner at 4.45pm. Yup..you heard right. It was crazy timing. But it had to be done for us to ensure we get a table and that we get our crabs. Even then, there was already a queue at the place. Crazy. Do not expect to get to eat your desired crabs at this place if you come after 6pm. This place is that popular.

Maybe because of this place’s popularity, there is a resident Crab Nazi here (to anyone who has watched Seinfeld and seen the Soup Nazi episode, you will know what I am talking about). This Crab Nazi is a middle aged women that holds court over her the place. She determines how you queue, what table you are assigned to & in most cases when you can (not should) eat. She is the overlord. The superior being. She does not take nonsense from anyone. There is true equality at work here. No matter if you are a company CEO, a supermodel or a heartlander (and dare I say it..a minister), you would get the same treatment from the Crab Nazi.

We started with the appertisers of You Tiao stuffed with Cuttlefish Filling (S$10) and Vegetable (S$8).

We were then interrupted with the sight of the revered crabs being delivered to the place. The rumors were true. They had the crabs airflown in on our very expensive national airline, Singapore Airline. I guess the crabs deserved a bit of luxury before they are brutally massacred.

The Mee Goreng (S$8, malay noodles done chinese style) were on their own fantastic too.

Then, the true stars of the show arrived. The Pepper Crab and the Chilli Crab (S$153 for 8 crabs). All conversation stopped at our table. Everyone was just focused on stuffing as much of the crabs into our mouths.

We polished off everything. There was the carnage of shells everywhere. The dead crabs can at least take comfort in that they became the best tasting Pepper Crab and Chilli Crab dishes in Singapore.
