I’ve heard so much about this place and had been meaning to go to it for some time. However, previous attempts to do so had always been thwarted by Singapore’s fickle weather.
This time, the trusty Minx organised a trip to it on a lazy Saturday evening. We almost did not make it again, due to a sudden late-afternoon downpour. Luckily, the skies had cleared somewhat by 6-plus and we were able to proceed according to plan.
The fairly long journey to the backwaters of Seletar Air Base was almost worth it just for a glimpse of the setting sun on the Seletar airfield and the smell of fresh air after the rain.

Perhaps because it had been raining, but Sunset Grill was nice and quiet (in a laidback and charmingly rustic way) when we arrived.

We’ve heard so much about the buffalo wings and knew we simply had to order this. Being unadventurous, we opted for the Level 3 wings (i.e. level of spiciness). It was finger-licking good and absolutely addictive. More importantly, it was, as Mad Sawa said, “kickass hot” - and she’s Indian, with Indian tastebuds! The Minx gave up after one buffalo wing (the room was dark, but I thought I saw her mouth swelling up, haha). I really can’t imagine anyone ordering (horrors…) Level 15 (this was the “Chef’s Challenge” wings, I think).

The deep fried button mushrooms were yummy as well. The mushrooms were fresh and huge and came piping hot and encased in delicious batter.

After the impressive starters, the evening took a slight downturn. First, the main courses were, frankly, disappointing and not worth the price. We ordered the lamb chops (very bland and tough, and the mint sauce dip tasted strange and watery) and the fish and chips (ordinary and flat). The total bill came up to S$81 for the three of us.

Secondly (and slightly more annoyingly), the place started to get a little crowded with excitable fellow diners toting huge digital SLR cameras and..well…tots. After a while, we couldn’t really see what we were eating - thanks to the blinding flash from one particular camera which lit up the room once every 20 seconds or so - maybe because, otherwise, they couldn’t really see their food in the dimly lit restaurant and we all know how food looks better in flashing light. We also couldn’t really hear ourselves since the aforesaid tots were making quite a ruckus with their imaginary friends and imaginary microphones before an imaginary audience (not that we missed very much, since the conversation consisted largely of Mad Sawa making not-very-sotto-voce snide remarks about the said tots’ Singapore Idol and/or The Dance Floor renditions).
Anyway, it seems that Seletar Airbase is slated for redevelopment and will be converted into a concrete aerospace hub in a few years’ time. So, better hurry there before that happens and the place loses its charm.
