Majestic Restaurant
Address: New Majestic Hotel, 31 Bukit Pasoh Road, Singapore 089845
A long overdue post. My sister had offered to treat the family on the occasion of my mum’s birthday last year. I jumped on the chance to freeload on my sister’s goodwill.
The venue of choice was Majectic Restaurant located in the New Majestic Hotel. Reputed to be rather pricy…heh heh.

I was surprised to find that the premises was rather small. I think the total floor area could sit at most 30~40 people.

Some of the decor there was frankly a bit perplexing.

This picture of the ceiling was supposed to show the unique feature of the restaurant - that of glass windows that provide the view of the bottom of a swimming pool. On that day, I did catch a glimpse of several ladies in swimming costumes wading around the pool. However, I would be rather concerned if a more unslightly specimen appeared in the view - say a fat man with rampant hair growth peeking out from a red speedo (the image is again seared into my mind as I type…).

On to food. We started with the appertisers of course. 4 different types of delicacies arranged on a platter. Sharks Fin & Egg On Lettuce, Wasabi Prawns, Drunken Chicken and Tempura Prawn (I think..it was almost 1/2 a year ago..). All good. Especially good due to the knowledge that I would not be paying for them..heh heh.

My Mum seems to be a soup person. She has taken to preparing soup for almost every meal at home nowadays. I suspect it is for the benefit of my sister. I am no soup person. My philosophy to soup is to gulp it down in the shortest amount of time thereby ensuring that the soup bypasses any of my taste buds. Anyway, she was onto the Soup With Superior Stock in a minute. All I can say was that it looked and tasted expensive.

The Foie Gras & Peking Duck with accompanying Crispy Wasabi Prawn. Blend of east and west. Infused with a certain awareness that the Foie Gras was the result of the cruel treatment of a goose, my enjoyment of the dish was tempered (just slightly though..).

Grilled Rack Of Lamb Served With Carrot Cake. I know that the picture angle is dreadful. I, unfortunately, have to take my pictures on the sly with a rather simple camera phone as I do not know the chef or the restaurant owner…sniff. Lamb prepared well is a joy. My family did not take to this dish due to certain preconceptions on the stinkiness of mutton. I liked the lamb.

Tofu, Broccolli & Abalone. Ok. Healthy I guess.

Scallops With Beans. The scallops here is a departure from the usual stuff I had when I was a kid. I still remember the fried breaded scallops I had. Those bought from NTUC. Those days, my trips to restaurants with my parents were to either MacDonald’s, Long John Silvers or A&W. Simpler (& poorer) times.

The supposedly highlight of the meal was the Lobster Noodles. The waitress had taken the precaution to inform us that this dish alone costs S$150. I think my sister was rather generous that day. She did not bate an eyelid when she confirmed the order for the dish.
Frankly, I did not like the lobster meat. I found it slightly bitter to the taste. It was S$150 that I felt was spend needlessly. The money could probably be spent on a destitute family in assisting them on their expenses for half a month; or alternatively the money could go into footing about 0.0075% of the new annual pay of one of our ministers…

Thank you sis for the meal (total bill came up to more than S$300)!

ehem, for the records, this is definitely not a rare showcase of generosity. In fact, the parents have long established that as compared to the Brother, da Sister is definitely more generous and filial.. *smug look* =D
