Auntie Kim’s Korean Restaurant

I was told by my girlfriend that the eatery is reputed to be one of the best Korean Restaurant in the country. Be warned that there is a severe lack of parking spaces at the location. Finally securing a lot, I was smacking my lips in anticipation of the feast.

The interior of the restaurant looked simple enough. Wooden furniture, check. Oriental vases and paintings, check. Waiters and waitresses in their Korean costume get-up, check.

Even though I do not really like the pickled appertisers that Korean restaurants normally serve, I appreciate the fact that they come free.
Kim Chi, pickled Zucchini, bean sprouts.

Vegetables, mashed potatoes (something identifiable) and alas, another dish of pickled something or other.

We went for the Beef or So Jung Sik (S$16). The menu states that the beef would be marinated in special sauces. However what I experienced was meat that was dry, tough and almost devoid of any form of sauce (special or otherwise). I felt that some of the pseudo korean food/hot plate beef that is served at food courts tasted better.
My girlfriend defended the dish and commented that she liked the beef and that she found the sauce indeed special.

The Doen Jang Chigae or Bean Paste Soup (S$14.50) fared slightly better in my books. Although tasting the Bean Paste Soup provided reminders of why I do not particularly like Bean Paste Soups. First off, it was not spicy. Secondly, there was Bean Paste in my soup along with other assorted vegetables.

At the end of the dinner, the waitress presented a surprise to us. We were given two boxes of Korean tidbits (some form of rice cakes/muah chee). I whispered with some pride to the girlfriend that maybe I had been identified by the establishment as a food writer and that they were trying to appease me by giving me freebies. My girlfriend without any hesitation pointed out the fact that every occupied table had a similar package. I sheepishly acknowledged that I was probably not so famous after all…

Hi,
I’m bringing 2 korean ladies for authentic korean food this saturday. A friend of mine recommended this restaurant called “Togi” in East Coast road. Any idea if it’s good? I might just bring them to Hyang To Gol cos of the location.

Oops, forgot to leave my name. I’ll type again…
I’m bringing 2 korean friends for an authentic korean meal this weekend and a friend of mine recommended “Togi” in east coast road. Wondering if you’ve tried the restaurant.
Maybe i’ll just bring them to Hyang To Gol cos of the location.

hi Denise, don’t think you can go wrong with Hyang To Gol. On the east coast restaurant, the last time I was in the vicinity, the only Korean restaurant I saw was a branch of Ju Shin Jung… you might want to confirm if “Togi” is still there

hey Denise… Togi is indeed still there - just had my dinner there the other day. it’s a lovely li’l family-run place, and i’d highly recommend it. the appetisers do also come complimentary and they have a rotating selection which have always been delicious. and their spicy noodles are my absolute fave. don’t try the glass noodles though - it’s starchy and a tad too chewy for my liking.
