The rest of the gang have already jotted down their tributes to J. I faltered. I was lazy. I kept putting it off. I am here to make amends. Here is my ode to my dear friend (cue…inspirational music…).

I still remember the first time I met you during orientation at the hostel back in university. First thoughts that came to my mind were, “damn…why is that guy so good looking…crap…now the girls will be flocking to him instead”.

I was to be proven correct. You were always the centre of attention for the female cohort. The rest of the gang could only look on as girls after girls made audacious attempts to win your fancy. They either played the “damsel in distress” card and asked you to fix their computers or they “happened” to really like how you did up hostel room and proceeded to spend tons of their time in your company.

However, you remained romantically unattached. Instead, you stayed with us, within our small guy group. We were not the most socially adept of people…nor did we have the most handsome mugs on the block. You became our leader. (cue…more inspirational music…) A huge reason why the group had so many happy memories would be attributed to you, J.

Now, you will be going for your studies. It was time to give you our sending away party. In keeping with the practices of this group, there will be nothing fancy, nothing elaborate. Just spending a weekend watching soccer.

First off was dinner at Parkway Parade. The name of the place had us confused for a moment:

“eh…let’s eat at Koo Kee’s”
“huh…I don’t feel like having western leh…”
“it’s Koo Kee’s Dumpling and Ramen lar…”
“what? cookies, dumpling and ramen….damn funny leh”
.
.
Anyway, a collective sigh of understanding was issued when we saw the signboard.

Appertisers took the form of Crunchy Green Cucumber (S$2). They tasted like the cucumbers that you would have served with chicken rice - marinated with soy sauce and quite tasty.

My meal for the night was the Fried Noodle With Pepper Beef (S$12). True be told, the dish tasted rather similar to items that I could have bought for a fraction of the cost at my local coffeeshop stall.

Some of the dudes had: Noodles With Chicken Soup (S$6.80, on the left) and Noodles With Five Spices Beef (S$5.80, on the right).

Judging from their expressions, I think the dishes were ok.

Others had the Spicy Seafood Soup Noodles (S$8). It looked quite appetising. The soup stock that I sampled wasn’t too bad either.

We had Steamed Juicy Meat Buns/Dumplings (S$5 for a set of 5 pcs) and a small bowl of Hot & Sour Soup (S$4.20) as accompaniment. They were acceptable.

Meetup, Dinner, Watching Soccer. Essential activities of our guy group. It will not be the same without you, J.
