Finally gotten round to writing this first entry of mine. Took me quite a while to realise that life doesn’t revolve around America’s Next Top Model and Project Runway. Er… anyways!
My family and I went to Beng Hiang – which serves Hokkien food – for dinner on Sunday some time back. It’s got rather cheena décor with the obiang wallpaper and the Chinese paintings. And it’s really huge too, though it’s not apparent if you’re looking in from the outside. So even though it was really crowded and we hadn’t made any reservations, we managed to get a table.
The first dish was mustard green with crabmeat. My very knowledgeable grandma told me that mustard green is actually giam chai before it’s been salted. Er, I think it tastes better salted. I guess I’m not a big fan of mustard green because it’s usually cut in rather chunky pieces. As a result, it is difficult to pretend to be ladylike because your mouth is contorted into funny shapes as you try to eat the offending object. And it’s got a slight bitter aftertaste. Therefore, this dish was just ok for me. But drizzling the crabmeat over your rice is quite delicious.
Next up was ngoh hiang. It was how a typical ngoh hiang would taste but I thought the meat taste was just a bit too strong.
The third dish was pork chop, hokkien style. I liked this dish! I’m not really a meat lover (I prefer vegetables and seafood) so in my humble opinion, if I like a meat dish, it must be really good! The meat was tender though I can’t remember what sauce it was fried in, but two thumbs up.

After that, it was the fried garoupa. Sorry, the waitress totally massacred the fish before I could take a picture. It was nice. $50 nice. Yup, you heard me right; this fish cost a freakin’ $50! Wah, we really baulked when the bill came later. What my aunt’s friend said is very true – if you order ‘live’ fish, you must always ask beforehand how much they charge per 100g and roughly how heavy the fish is going to weigh. Don’t paiseh about such things man.

Last up was the hokkien mee. Delicious. Add in some sambal chilli and it’s even more shiok!
There is complimentary green bean soup for dessert. But you can give it a miss. It is very watery and bland and there is not much green bean.

Overall, I think the food here is really not bad at all. And if the whole of Singapore seems to be out in full force and gluing their butts to the seats of every other eatery, you know there’s always a spot for you @ good ol’ Beng Hiang!
