Met up with some of my Best Gal Pals (BGP) on a Friday night.
The folks at Mellben are apparently related to the ones at Uncle Leong’s (at Block 233, just across the carpark from them). BGPs and I had eaten at Uncle Leong’s sometime back and had loved their claypot crab beehoon.
One of my BGPs had been having a crab craving for some time (which turned out to be rather contagious). This time, we decided to go for the best (or, at least, what we’ve been told is the best). The extremely long queue did not deter us (although we have BGP known as DY to thank for that - she arrived earlier than us and did the queuing up).
We ordered the claypot crab beehoon, butter crab, kailan and fried beancurd. After the long wait for a table, we settled down for yet another long wait for our food.
The kailan (S$12) arrived first. We were ravenous by then, so I found it to be quite yummy. I liked the fact that it came with a generous amount of mushrooms.

The crab beehoon arrived next (when I say next, I mean some twenty minutes or so later).

BGP known as DY and I felt that this topped the already excellent one at Uncle Leong’s. While the crab beehoon at Uncle Leong’s is more peppery, the crab beehoon at Mellben is more tasty (read: looaads of butter in the soup!).
We also had the butter crab (the crab beehoon and the butter crab are priced at S$63 altogether). After the crabs were finished, I concentrated on mopping up the buttery sauce with fried mantou Absolutely heavenly! This was my favourite dish by far.

We also had the fried beancurd (S$8). BGP known as WM likes the fried beancurd.

I think Mellben could just be the best seafood place in Singapore. As BGP known as WM would say (just to show off her supremacy in the Chinese language), 这里的菜肴油而不腻,食而不厌…绝对让您津津有味,垂涎三尺. You get the drift…

I protest! Only the first one came from me! You forgot the phrase literally translated as “lingering fragrance between the crevices of teeth”. I only learn from the best Channel U presenters.
You also forgot to mention that the crab in crab beehoon was a tad dry and overcooked that day. Uncle Leong’s crabs are succulent! And to only go to Melben when the satay stall is closed cos crabs probably taste better when the PSI is not 200.

Had a crab dinner in MellBen with 5 other colleagues last Friday. Had called over 2 days before to make reservations - but it was either an engaged tone or a ringtone and nobody bothers to pick up.
We decided to go early - like before 6.00pm to avoid the queue. We did arrive quite early and were almost glad about it when we were soon met with a young lady who took order in a most ‘order-quick-or-get-lost’ attitude while we were standing in a queue. Bad luck or what - it seemed others in the queue also received the same fate.
The lady asked which gender we want of the crab. We ordered 3 different ways to cook the crab and we know the female ones would be better for the butter crab and chilli crab but the male ones are ok with the beehoon soup version.
“NO - cannot - must be the same gender for one table. Both same price.”
So … you settle for the second best.
Finally we were given a table. Not too bad - but some of us have to bear with the setting sun. But we would like to change our plastic stools for the chairs with a back. “NO - cannot change.”
But we were very lucky to have one waitress who gave us chairs to put our pretty handbags - so that we can eat with both hands.
Enough said! We were glad when the food arrived.
BUT I WON”T go to MELLBEN for a long while… and will not bring my friends there to be treated this way …
ZERO for customer-service!!!

I hope you still check your blog, cos I want to ask you a question about this restaurant. I hope to treat my family to a meal there but I’m just wondering, other than crabs, are there other specialities, dishes. I ‘m worried for my grandmother. She’s not a fan of crabs you see. And, whts the price range of say… the crab beehoon? Please let me know.
Thanks!
Best regards,
Mary

unfortunately, I think the main speciality there are the crabs. The place is defintely not cheap though.
