My colleagues and I needed a quiet place for us to talk shop and basically gossip. For the record, we were all guys and yes, some guys do like to gossip. Swensen’s presented quite an attractive option as there wasn’t a crowd to speak off and we had one of those booths with high backed couches.
Swensen’s was a favourite hang out spot for me when I was in junior college. It was the default place for the holding of celebrations such as birthdays, farewell parties, the end of exams and any other occasion where the opposite sex was involved. I guess guys like us took it into our heads that the definitive demostration of classiness and extravagence was to hold a dinner at Swensen’s (in our defence, we probably couldn’t afford anywhere else more upmarket).
I immediately zoomed in on their Mega Burger (S$12.90). I had heard good things about it. There was talk that it was much better than the burgers offered at Carl’s Junior. It was certainly an impressive sight when the burger was presented at our table.

A beef patty, layers of ham, strings of crispy bacon, lettuce, tomato slices, onions, cheese, a fried egg …all sandwiched by toasted sesame seed buns. The accompaniments were french fries (or freedom fries as the Americans used to call it..heh heh) and a side of coleslaw. Forget about quality, there was enough quantity here to feed two adults. I awarded this burger my “value for money” seal of approval.
My other colleagues went for other more work-safe fare (I was struggling to keep away the rest of the afternoon after my humongous meal). My colleagues had the promotional offer of 2 Chicken Baked Rice for just S$16.80 and also a Haiwaiian Pizza (S$9.90). According to them, the dishes were not terribly exciting but they were acceptable.

Trudging sleepily back to the office, I promised myself I would cut down on my food intake for lunch in future.
