I made repeat visits to Coffee Club in the space of one weekend, though not the same branch. On this occasion, the original Coffee Club in Siglap had the honour of my patronage.
For you young boys and girls sipping on your cafe latte and your mocha frappes now, know that the coffee drinking scene in Singapore had its beginnings right here in Siglap. Back then, if parents caught their teenager son or daughter spending ridiculous amounts drinking coffee (upwards of more than 10 times that which could be had at the local, very much less refined, coffee-stores), they would roll their eyes and then proceed to beat the crap out of their free-spending kids.
A group of yaya-papaya, westernised teenagers, in defiance of their parents and good money sense, began to make Coffee Club their hang-out. Many cuppas were downed while these teenagers moaned and groaned about school work, the state of their love affairs (at that point, non existent…thus the disproportionate time spent hanging out with members of the same sex…considering that our libido was then at its peak…it was mental torture of the highest degree) and which Nike sports shoe would make us look the coolest.
I am proud to say that my friends and I were those teenagers. We were the trend setters. The first of the generation….
Coffee Club Siglap had just had a renovation. Gone were the soft and warm lighting and the laid back cushions. In its place were a brighter interior and a seemingly less cluttered space.

I was there with MILK and two friends that I had not met up with for quite some time. We had our cuppa and our food. Much older (maybe wiser…) now, we engaged in topics that were very much different from when we were in our youth. Topics like our career, the pros and cons of remaining in Singapore, housing needs and juicy gossips on our other friends (some things never change).
The food provided served as companion while we reverted back to form as the original Coffee Club gang.

Chicken Pie (S$6.90)

Crepe Mushroom ($10.90). It was an innovative dish. Pieces of crepe filled with mushrooms and a layer of cheese on top made a filling dish.

Cappuccino (S$5.50).

Royaltine Cake (S$6). Hazelnut and chocolate flavour.
