Felt like a piece of turd when I woke up. The only word to describe it is “sian”.
“Sian” encapsulates the howl of anguish that many Singaporeans utter when they go about their hum-drum lives.
“Sian” is the hokkien word (the lingua franca of most Chinese Singaporeans, army personnel, construction workers, coffee shop residents, etc etc) used to describe frustration at the current situation one is in.
“Sian” instantly connects Singaporeans.
“Sian” could be the most popular word here.
“Sian” is a national malaise.
“Sian” too often reflects the hidden discontentment and dis-enchantment of the person uttering it.
Dragging my body through the first part of the day, I finally reached the mid-point - lunch. Sick of the common fare served in the food courts, I ventured to the newly opened Don Pie Club.
Don Pie Club is a growing chain of stores that sell…pies. I have no idea why it is called a club. It brings to mind the Mickey Mouse Club (unfortunately, when I was still glued to the program…Britney Spears was not yet a Mouseketeer..damn…I have since graduated to Hi-5…they are just so cheerful…I wish I was a part of Hi-5).
Bought myself the Chicken Pie (S$4) from the enthusiastic sales person. She was so delighted at having ensnared me that I did not have the heart to refuse her offer. Like a recluse, I sulked back to my tiny office cubicle to feed on my grub.

The Pie as they normally go, had potato, chunks of chicken meat, the token bits of carrots plus asssorted peas and the ingredient that provided some highlight in my day (which tells you how low I was) - substantial portions of egg.
On another day, I would have savoured the Pie. But today, I was Sian. Sigh.

TOTALLY agree..Singapore is ‘Uniquely Sian’…local tourism is often much ignored. How many more merlions of different sizes can we take. Shopping sucks in Singapore compared to KLCC and Siam Paragon, Orchard road is teeming with credit card vendors and roadshows, try walking for 10m without spotting a flyer distributor. Sian is Singapore..

Which makes a more apt description to every damn “sian” thing here… “KAN SIAN” =p
