We heard that there was an ice-cream parlour that served Tiger Beer sorbet. Using that as an excuse for sampling some cold dessert, we hustled on to Island Creamery located at Serene Centre.

I remember Serene Centre from my schooling days. A place where students from many schools congregate. A chance for students of the opposite sex, particular from same-sex schools, to mingle and flirt and also for the less attractive specimens to learn how superficial and cruel society in general can be. At that time, I belonged to the latter group. Those were the days when the more fashionable guys had the centre-parting/side-parting hairstyle whereby they would comb and mousse their moderately long and straight hair to mimic the famous Hong Kong actors at that time - basically Aaron Kwok, he of the “对你爱爱爱“ fame. On the other hand, I had hair that had been described as having the consistency of wire and the thickness of a Primary Forest. If the trend then was to have natural afros, I would be one heck of a desirable dude. Not that I didn’t try out the centre-parting look…however I turned out like a rocker from a heavy metal rock band (yes..a member of a rock band is obviously quite cool…however picture me with hair that increased my height by up to 20% and also note that I had quite a skinny and undeveloped body then….it was not a pretty sight).

The place looked more or less the same. The students were still congregating at Macdonalds (pretending to study when everyone knows that is the last thing on their minds). Looking at the setup of the Island Creamery, I knew that this place would be another popular hang-out place for the student population.

Part of the reason could be the reasonable prices for the ice cream. At S$2.50 for one scoop, it is definitely affordable to the typical student.

The flavours were exotic, no boring chocolate, vanilla or strawberries for you here. Taking the cue from other local favourite desserts, the proprietors of Island Creamery have created flavours that you would not find commonly available elsewhere.

We had Mango, Teh Terak, Pulut Hitam, Apple Pie ice cream and the Tiger Beer sorbet. The Teh Terak is tea with milk that derives its name from the way it is cooled and made frothy - the teh terak-er would pour the liquid between two steel containers held at arm’s length away repeatedly. The Pulut Hitam is a local Malay dessert that has a coconut milk base with glutinous rice. The taste of all the ice cream versions mimicked the originals quite well.

[editor’s note: I had omitted to mention that bt had the Kahlua Latte. I have no re-collection of how it tasted. Maybe the Kahlua got to me.]

However, the pick of the crop then was the Apple Pie ice cream. The aroma of the apple was discernible and there was even chucks of the apple pie crumble in the ice cream. Two thumbs up.

Unfortunately, while everyone chose to ask for their scoops in a cup, one dude elected to have his Tiger Sorbet in a cone. Seeing as I did not really want to share his spittle, I would not be able to comment on the taste of the Tiger Sorbet. Which kinda defeated our original purpose of going to Island Creamery. I present to you the inconsiderate dude…(he is by the way a Tottenham Hotspurs FC fan…Arsenal fans would know what I am getting at).

island creamery is a nice place for hang out/study and to indulge in ice cream (get tubs, its more worth it).. esp those unusual flavours tt u cant find elsewhere.. i’ve been there once, tried their pulut hitam & reverso.. its real good!! another thing is tt they will play nice songs w/o repeating it in a day..
but.. i was served by tis gal by the name of tricia (i got to know her name after asking arnd) and disliked her serving attitude at all. impolite and stiff face. heard tt her attitude was bad not onli towards customers but also towards new staff.. so for those considering to work there, look out for tt gal..

Yes, I totally agree with darren - I was there at about 3pm today with my two friends. She showed a black face when I told her I wished to switch one of my orders to cone type. Later, I wanted to buy a tub of chendol ice cream home, I asked if I could try first. Her curt reply puts me off.” We don’t have any - sorry!” as if telling me that it’s a pain to serve us. Boy! what a bad taste she ’s giving some of us. PHEW!

I agree with Allen. The Tiger Sorbet doesn’t really sound very appealing. Maybe they could market it to the coffee shop uncles who loiter around and drink beer all day..heh. Although, I hesitate to imagine how a bunch of beer bellied uncles licking their ice creams would look like…

In the East, I know of two ice cream palours.

One’s The Ice Cream Gallery at Eastwood, opposite Bedok Camp. Somewhere near the foodcourt, I believe.

The other’s The Ice Cream Chef, but I couldnt tell the exact location because it was my friend who brought me there.
