Seng (阿成) Wanton Noodles

Address: 271 Onan Road, Dunman Food Centre, Stall 13, Singapore 424768

I was on my supper craving again. Armed with 3 of my fellow foodies (2 Easties and 1 Eastie wannabe - Eastie as in people who live in the east of Singapore…erm… notwithstanding that the size of Singapore had previously been “colourfully” illustrated as equivalent to your “pi-sai” or booger), we ventured to Dunman Food Centre.

Dunman Food Centre is located right in the heart of Joo Chiat. Joo Chiat, many months back, had the potential to rival Geylang (THE red-light district in Singapore) in the sleaze department. However, its aspiring developments were brutally crushed by people power - the local residents lobbied the area’s Member of Parliament to put an end to the growth of massage parlours, karaoke lounges, bars (all catering to the lusty needs of the male race). Joo Chiat, however, still retains a measure of the illicit sex industry. Which leads to an observation (inspired by my buddy MILK)…

The Singapore Government has committed much resources to making the country a vibrant and exciting city (officially allowing bar-top dancing, crowing about the opening of Moulin Rouge, a topless cabaret show.. etc etc). Though one only needs to look at the night scene in places like Geylang and Joo Chiat to see that there is literally a hotbed of cosmopolitan activity and vibrancy. No doubt there is sleaze, prostitution and a flesh trade. But in a symbiotic relationship, night spots, hotels, eating places and crowds thrive in the environment. Sex sells…

I was not there for sex, no siree… I was there to get myself some good wholesome supper…yup yup. Rest assured that you can always find food at all hours in Singapore.

There is supposedly one famous Wanton (I apologise for using “Wanton” when phonetically it should be “Wan tan”) noodle stall in the Dunman Food Centre. I am unsure if it was “Seng”, but what the hell…I am game for adventure.

SengWanton02.jpgThe Wanton noodle served in Singapore is usually thin noodles mixed with generous dollops of chilli, soy sauce and other condiments (depending on the ingenuity of the hawker) and paired with slices of BBQ pork that are coloured with red dye (which bright spark came up with the idea…yes..to make it more palatable…I shall now colour my pork an angry shade of red..AH HA). It is accompanied by pork dumplings swimming in soup that is laced with MSG.

Seng’s Wanton noodles (S$2) fitted the above description. Do not expect a huge portion as you are only paying a miserly 2 dollars (not much you can buy in Singapore with that amount nowadays). The noodles were quite spicy hot but not extreme as to burn your tongue. I would say that the noodles are a good fit for supper. Enough to satisfy that night hunger pangs.

One of the dudes had noodles with Chicken Legs (S$3) or Phoenix Claws as they are elegantly termed. Yes…Chicken Legs…the chinese are known for eating anything and everything…yup..proud to be Chinese..heh
