Well…I am trying to pick up the game of golf. I am ashamed to say that it is due in part to my attempt to live the high life…hob nob with the rich and famous … join yuppiedom. However, when 6 dudes with their full golfing gear have to squeeze into 2 cars and travel for more than 2 hours into Malaysia on a Sunday so that they can tee off during the period when the blazing sun is at its zenith (and the locals are lounging around in the shade wondering what these crazy Singaporeans are doing…) just to enjoy special promotional rates, the realisation sets in that this is not exactly the high life.

Just in case you wonder where the food is featured, the above mentioned special promotional rate golf package (RM105 nett) includes….(cue drum roll)…the “Local Set Lunch of the day”!!

This is what we got.

Hardly culinary masterpieces. I had the black pepper chicken with the sad clump of cabbage huddling in one corner (the cabbage was probably keeping a wary eye out for the prickly small hill of rice…the rice was tough…get it..hur hur). I looked on enviously as my friend’s curry chicken with rice was presented before us. For the record, out of the 6 dudes, he was the only one going for the curry chicken. Almost unanimously, the remaining 5 dudes peered at their own meals, gave short resigned sighs and proceeded to dismantle their bunker of rice.

The rest of the afternoon was engaged in the sport of golf. The score I had was - Me: 152 vs golf course: 0. In case you want to give me a pat on the back for the impressive scoreline…please take note that the aim of golf is to take as few stroke as possible to get the pipsqueak of the ball from a tee-off point into a equally pipsqueak of a hole a distance away. Also take note that a normal golf professional cards scores of around 70. I would be proud to proclaim that I am probably one of the worst golf player of all time… I was better off using my golf clubs as hockey sticks and just pushing the ball into the hole…in fact it bags the question why I brought my golfing gear all the way from Singapore when the distance on the ball achieved by my golf swing could be bettered by my picking up the ball and just throwing it…(which was what I did for one particularly tricky shot…heh heh).

Like survivors of the apocalypse, we trudged back into the clubhouse. We were quite dehydrated yet soaked to the skin (it was scorching hot and then there was a thunderstorm) and totally famished.

It was then that our saviour appeared. According to one of the dudes, he was known as the legend of …erm…the Legend Golf Resort. He was the “murtabak” man. You can tell by the tall chef’s hat that he was no ordinary maker of murtabak.

Legends07.jpgThe murtabak is an Indian dish. It is prepared from a flour mix which is beaten into submission. The resulting flattened dough is flipped and spun into a thinner film. Minced beef, onion and egg is added into the dough and sealed into a neat package. Served with vegetable curry, chicken curry, red hot chilli, and onion coloured with outrageous pink dye… it is simply one of the best murtabaks (RM10.50) I have had. It may be due to the circumstances but I was almost willing to pay the murtabak’s weight in gold for the meal.

I may never be able to acquire much wealth…but sometimes its the travel, food and life experiences that one gathers that makes one truly rich. I look forward to my next golf adventure.
